Located just south of Amsterdam, Lisse is the flower capital of the Netherlands (a quick Google Images search will confirm that!) as it harbours one of the largest flower gardens in the world: The Keukenhof Gardens. Spanning 79 acres, there are over seven million bulbs planted here each year, making it one of the most popular sites to visit in Europe. I was able to spend some time in Holland last spring during a weekend getaway and was awestruck by the gardens’ colourful sea of tulips that surrounded me at every turn.
This year, the gardens will be open from March 24 – May 16, 2016, which gives you around eight weeks to go and see the breathtaking array of floral displays. Wondering when the best time to visit is? I suggest planning your trip in April to ensure the flowers are in full bloom.

Thank you! I found the gardens just as beautiful in real life. Although, you need to make sure you don’t visit too early / too late in the season to ensure that the flowers are all there (this includes the large tulip fields outside of the park).

So amazingly beautiful! We have friends that are currently stationed in Italy and they’re planning a trip to Amsterdam for the annual tulip festival, but I’ll have to tell them to check out Lisse if they have time!
