With no shortage of delicious options, Madrid is a top contender when it comes to eating in Europe. Want to know which of its many markets is for you? Here’s a list of the best food markets in Madrid – and which one best suits your travel style.

For the tourist
Located steps away from Plaza Mayor, the Mercado de San Miguel is on most first-time travellers’ lists. After a major – and long – restoration, this market reopened in 2009 and has been perpetually full ever since. Adorned with gorgeous glass windows that catch stares from passer-bys, here is where you’ll find over 30 stalls with fresh produce, gifts, and tapas bars with beer and cava.

For the off the beaten path traveller
Chueca’s Mercado de San Antón is definitely underrated and oh so good. A perfect spot for a quick lunch or to shop produce, be sure to check out its 20 plus food stalls and copious tapas selection (they have an entire “food court” style floor dedicated to tapas). If you’re looking to enjoy a sit-down meal – or want to have a drink on an elevated terrace – visit the modern market’s in-house restaurant, la Cocina de San Antón, for food and drinks on a lovely outdoor patio.

For the hipster
Nestled in Madrid’s hipster Malasaña barrio, the Mercado de San Ildefonso’s location is enough of a hint as to what awaits. Made up of several bars, tapas stations, and open-air patios, spending your Friday night at a market has never been so hip. This fairly new food hub possesses 15 stalls, three bars, and two terraces, all spread out onto three floors.

For the gourmet foodie
Similar to Eataly, El Corte Inglés’ Gourmet Experience will satisfy even the most discerning gourmet. Located on the top floor of El Corte Ingles, this upscale market boasts top-notch restaurants, bars, and an unparalleled selection of foodie souvenirs (both local and international). Oh, and it all comes with a view. Enjoy your meal and glass of wine on their rooftop terrace, overlooking Gran Via and the Plaza Del Callao.
